The advantage of taking Nicholas Hellmuth's course in person in Guatemala are all the golden photo opportunities.

Here professor Hellmuth leads his students to the abandoned railroad yards of the old national railway system. It is preserved as a sort of museum of dry rot process. The entire facility is precisely as it was when abandoned when the main train station burned down over a decade ago.

The old locomotives and train cars of former years make fabulous subjects for color photography. The aging wood of the cars can be translated into exhibit-quality black-and-white digital photo prints.

It would be misleading to think that all of Guatemala looked like this train cemetary. The university where the course is held is as modern (and better equipped) than most universities in the USA and Europe, as you can see below. The city itself is also modern.
